My Wim Hof Retreat Experience: Breathwork, Ice Baths, Lessons
27 Nov, 2024 | 3 min
This November, I travelled to Stroe, a serene spot just 45 minutes from Amsterdam, with my “cold-water crew”—Lara, Wendy, and Tanya. After a delightful day exploring Amsterdam, we made our way to a cozy hotel just seven minutes from the Wim Hof retreat, ready for an unforgettable weekend.

From the moment we arrived at the retreat, the energy was warm, inviting, and deeply connected to nature. Nestled amidst greenery, the space was designed to balance fun, simplicity, and comfort. As someone still considering myself a beginner in the Wim Hof Method, I felt at ease alongside 60 other attendees from across the globe—absolute beginners and experienced practitioners alike.
Day One: Breathing with Wim Hof
The highlight of the retreat, for me, was our first breathing session led by Wim Hof himself. Having practiced Wim Hof breathing for two years, I thought I knew what to expect—but this was unlike anything I’d ever experienced.
Wim’s presence, singing, and drumming created a surreal and powerful atmosphere. We practiced extended rounds of circular breathing, 40 to 60 breaths per cycle, followed by a retention phase. I felt a surge of energy in my body, tingling sensations traveling up my face—a little disconcerting at first. Thankfully, one of the incredible instructors, Stacha, reassured me that this was perfectly normal.
The collective energy of the group amplified the experience. It wasn’t just about the physical benefits of breathwork (which are well-documented—check them out here); it was about the connection to ourselves and each other. It was exhilarating to be “high on our own supply,” as Wim often says.
A heartfelt thank you to Wim, Stacha (Instagram), Leandre (Instagram), and Dagna (Instagram) for making this experience unforgettable.

Ice Baths: A Lesson in Resilience
After the breathwork, we transitioned to the ice baths. On the first day, we spent five minutes in freezing water. The breathwork helped immensely, creating an alkaline state that made the cold more bearable—but my hands struggled. I kept them submerged for the full five minutes and regretted not taking them out or wearing gloves.
On the second day, under Wim’s guidance, we doubled the time to 10 minutes. This time, I left my hands out of the water, which made a world of difference. Wim’s drumming and encouragement created an incredible sense of resilience and connection. His energy was both grounding and uplifting, and his presence inspired all of us to push beyond our perceived limits.
Between sessions, the camaraderie was palpable. Participants shared hugs, stories, and laughter, creating a sense of community that was as transformative as the physical challenges.

Key Takeaways from my Wim Hof Retreat
The Importance of Fun
Wim reminded us to approach life with a sense of humor, saying, “Seriously have fun.” While his mission to reduce suffering and improve mental health is serious, he encourages a playful attitude toward life.
Connection and Healing
The group was incredibly diverse—neurologists, trauma specialists, parents, and even those grieving profound losses. One mother, mourning the recent loss of her 16-year-old daughter, attended with friends to find a path through her grief. These moments of shared humanity made the retreat even more meaningful.
Science Meets Determination
Wim’s dedication to helping people, especially teenagers and children, was inspiring. He shared stories of success backed by science, but one phrase stood out: “I don’t know how, but I will do it.” His determination to bring hope to the world is contagious.

A Personal Reflection from my Wim Hof Experience
This retreat wasn’t just about cold exposure and breathing; it was about reconnecting with what matters most. I missed my dad during the retreat, wishing I could have shared the experience with him, even if he might’ve stayed out of the water. But as my dear friend Tanya reminded me, there’s always the possibility of sharing this with my children one day.
The Wim Hof retreat was a transformative experience that I’ll carry with me forever. If you ever get the chance to attend, I can’t recommend it enough. The combination of breathwork, cold exposure, community, and Wim Hof’s unique presence is something truly special.
Thank you, Wim, for creating something so powerful and life-changing.
🌱 Takeaway: Whether it’s through breathwork, cold immersion, or simply having fun in the seriousness of life, there’s always a way to reconnect, heal, and grow.

Women, Pauses, and Power: Reclaiming the Space Between Words
17 Dec, 2025
A few weeks ago, during a group session, we had a conversation that stayed with me, not because of what was said, but because of what wasn’t. We were discussing communication and confidence when one of my clients mentioned something interesting. She said she’d been told that in her meetings, she “didn’t allow enough pauses.”And… Continue reading Women, Pauses, and Power: Reclaiming the Space Between Words
Warmth + Competence = Charisma: The Confidence Equation No One Talks About

If I asked you to think of someone truly charismatic, what comes to mind? For most people, charisma feels like a mysterious trait. Something you’re either born with or you’re not. But in truth, charisma is something we build. It’s not a performance or a personality type; it’s the ability to help people feel both… Continue reading Warmth + Competence = Charisma: The Confidence Equation No One Talks About
Micro-Moments of Connection: The Small Gestures That Build Trust
16 Nov, 2025
When we think about communication, we often focus on what we’re saying: the words, the message, the delivery. But the truth is, the things that matter most often happen in between the words. Those small, almost invisible gestures (the nods, the eye contact, the pauses, the smiles) they are what I call micro-moments of connection.… Continue reading Micro-Moments of Connection: The Small Gestures That Build Trust
