Redefining Your Labels to Embrace Change and Improvement

In life, we often find ourselves confined by labels, whether they are self-imposed or assigned by others. These labels can be limiting, shaping our beliefs about what we can or cannot do. However, it’s important to remember that labels are not fixed, and redefining your labels can bolster your power to change and improve.

This was actually a video message I recorded for my children about redefining your labels. 😊 This messaging can work for both children and parents alike!

Challenging the Status Quo and Redefining Your Labels

Many of us have grown up hearing things like “I’m not good at math” or “I’m shy.” These labels can become self-fulfilling prophecies if we accept them without question.

It was recently the theme of our group coaching call in June and July. We spent some time doing a personality test – the MBTI personality trait and whilst we had fun doing it (a bit like when you read your horoscope) we were quite skeptical about it. The reason being that personalities are not permanent (check the fantastic book by Benjamin Hardy on the topic, link here).

A group member said she had done the test two years ago but after working more on herself and moving towards a different goal, her personality had changed.

The idea being that labels are limiting, they create this mindset that is fixed. As my mentor Sam Qurashi shared with me when I asked what his opinion was about personality tests he said: “people enable themselves for giving themselves an excuse: “that’s my personality type” or my “personality disorder”“. Labels are an excuse not to do something and feed procrastination.

Labels complicate things. Labels keep you stuck and do not create flexibility of thoughts. They can also be dangerous as others may view you in a certain way and not believe you are capable of change!

Is your past defining you today? Do you believe you can break free from your past and change?

Instead of being defined by these limitations, ask yourself:

  • “Why do I want to improve in this area?
  • “What would achieving this goal mean for me?”

For instance, wanting to become better at public speaking might not be just about overcoming shyness but about connecting with others or sharing your knowledge. By focusing on the underlying motivation—the “why”—you can find the passion and drive to pursue growth in that area.

The Importance of a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed with effort, learning, and persistence. This mindset encourages a focus on improvement rather than being confined by existing capabilities.

When you encounter a label, whether it’s “not good at languages” or “not athletic,” instead of accepting it, consider it an opportunity for growth. Ask yourself, “How can I get better at this?” and seek out resources and strategies to help you improve.

Taking Practical Steps Towards Redefining Your Labels

1. Identify the Label:

Start by identifying the labels that you or others have placed on you. Write them down and reflect on how they affect your self-perception and actions.

2. Connect with Your Motivation:

Understand the deeper reasons behind why you want to change a particular label. Is it for personal growth, professional development, or building better relationships?

3. Set Clear Goals:

Define specific, actionable goals that align with your motivations. For example, if you want to improve in math, set a goal to practice for 30 minutes each day using online resources or tutoring.

4. Seek Support and Resources:

Look for tools, communities, or mentors that can support your journey. Whether it’s online courses, books, or workshops, there are numerous resources available to help you grow.

5. Reflect and Adapt:

Regularly assess your progress and adapt your strategies as needed. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small, and use setbacks as learning opportunities.

Embracing Change and Growth

It’s important to understand that growth and change are ongoing processes. You are not confined to a single path, and it’s okay to evolve and redefine your capabilities and interests over time. By continuously questioning and challenging the labels you encounter, you open up new possibilities for personal and professional growth.

Final Thoughts

Remember, you have the power to change and redefine the labels in your life. Embrace a growth mindset, stay curious about your motivations, and take proactive steps towards your goals. The journey to improvement is not just about becoming better at something; it’s about discovering new aspects of yourself and embracing your full potential.

So, next time you feel limited by a label, ask yourself: How can I change this narrative? The answer could lead to profound personal transformation.

Break the Parenting Mold with Connection, Confidence, and Compassion

04 Oct, 2025

As parents, we all come into this journey with expectations: of ourselves, of our children, and of what family life “should” look like. But what happens when your child doesn’t quite fit the mold? When their behavior or way of communicating doesn’t line up with what you imagined, or what society tells you is “normal”?… Continue reading Break the Parenting Mold with Connection, Confidence, and Compassion

The Myth of “This Is the Only Path” for High-Performing Professionals

20 Sep, 2025

There’s a belief I see often in high-performing professionals, especially those working in fast-paced, competitive industries like finance, law, or tech. And the only “good” choice is the one that keeps you on… Continue reading The Myth of “This Is the Only Path” for High-Performing Professionals

There’s a kind of pressure that doesn’t always get talked about, but most of us feel it: The pressure to be “always available”. Especially in high-achieving work cultures, there’s this expectation (spoken or not) that you should respond quickly, drop what you’re doing, or stay late, just in case you’re needed. And if you don’t,… Continue reading The “Always Available” Trap in the Workplace: How to Reclaim Your Time
