How To Balance Career and Family as a Working Parent
29 May, 2024 | 4 min
Balancing a successful career with the demands of family life is a challenge many of my clients face. The mental load of juggling work deadlines, household chores, and family responsibilities can often feel overwhelming. However, practical strategies can ease this burden and create a more harmonious life. Here’s how you can find balance career and family as a working parent.
Understanding the Mental Load
The mental load refers to the invisible yet important task of managing household responsibilities, often shouldered by working parents. From scheduling appointments to remembering birthdays, this cognitive labor can lead to significant stress. Addressing the mental load is the first step towards achieving a balanced life.
Many career moms find themselves constantly thinking about the next thing on the to-do list, which can lead to burnout. It’s essential to acknowledge this load and seek ways to share it.
Knowing Your Priorities
As working parents, we often think that everything is important. It’s not. When we are in the spiral of life, we feel overwhelmed and triggered by the smallest thing, and we lose sight of what truly matters.
Sometimes, taking time off to reset our minds is the best solution. If that’s not possible, talking to someone and tapping into your priorities can make a huge difference. Be humble and ask for help; it’s key as a leader and a working parent.
The Power of Delegation as a Working Parent
Delegation is a powerful tool that can transform the way you manage your day-to-day tasks. By sharing responsibilities at home and work, you can free up mental space and reduce stress. Effective delegation involves clear communication, setting realistic expectations, and trusting others to take on tasks.
One of my clients was struggling with the mental load of managing both a demanding job and family responsibilities. Through our coaching sessions, she learned to delegate tasks at home and work, which not only alleviated her stress but also empowered her team and family members.
Practical Delegation Tips for Career Mothers:
- Identify Tasks: List all tasks and decide which ones can be delegated.
- Communicate Clearly: Provide clear instructions and expectations.
- Trust: Trust the person you are delegating to and resist the urge to micromanage.
- Follow Up: Check in periodically to ensure tasks are on track and offer support if needed.
Delegation can also mean deleting tasks from the to-do list. Delegate, Postpone, and Delete are the key rules of planning the time we have allocated.
Delegating means trusting someone else to do your job, easier said than done. It can also mean hiring someone to help with kids when you already have sacrificed a lot of your time at work. That brings a lot of GUILT! If you follow me I talk a lot about that in my content!
Building Resilience as a Working Parent
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and adapt to challenges. For working parents, resilience is key to maintaining a positive outlook and thriving in both personal and professional spheres. Techniques such as mindfulness, self-care, and setting boundaries can help build and sustain resilience.
My approach includes helping clients build resilience by focusing on their strengths and developing a growth mindset. One client, during a particularly challenging corporate merger, was able to maintain her composure and even find new career aspirations through resilience-building techniques.
Strategies to Build Resilience:
- Mindfulness Practices: Incorporate meditation or mindfulness exercises into your daily routine.
- Self-Care: Prioritize self-care activities that recharge you, whether it’s exercise, hobbies, or relaxation.
- Set Boundaries: Clearly define work and personal time to prevent burnout.
- Positive Relationships: Surround yourself with supportive friends, family, and colleagues.
Embracing Change as a Working Parent
Change is inevitable, and learning to embrace it can lead to personal growth and new opportunities. I encourage working parents to view change as a stepping stone rather than a setback. Whether it’s a career transition or a shift in family dynamics, embracing change with a positive mindset can lead to fulfilling experiences.

I highlight the story of a client who, through coaching, found the courage to pursue a new career path that aligned with her passions. This shift not only brought her professional satisfaction but also improved her work-life balance.
Advice for Embracing Change:
- Stay Open-Minded: Be open to new opportunities and experiences.
- Seek Support: Don’t be afraid to ask for help from coaches, mentors, or support groups.
- Reflect and Adapt: Regularly reflect on your experiences and adapt your strategies as needed.
- Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small.

As parents, we all come into this journey with expectations: of ourselves, of our children, and of what family life “should” look like. But what happens when your child doesn’t quite fit the mold? When their behavior or way of communicating doesn’t line up with what you imagined, or what society tells you is “normal”?… Continue reading Break the Parenting Mold with Connection, Confidence, and Compassion

There’s a belief I see often in high-performing professionals, especially those working in fast-paced, competitive industries like finance, law, or tech. It’s the belief that “this is the only path” that you can take. One version of success. One way to move forward. And the only “good” choice is the one that keeps you on… Continue reading The Myth of “This Is the Only Path” for High-Performing Professionals

There’s a kind of pressure that doesn’t always get talked about, but most of us feel it: The pressure to be “always available”. And if you don’t,… Continue reading The “Always Available” Trap in the Workplace: How to Reclaim Your Time
